Tara is a female bodhisattva who embodies the feminine aspect of compassion. He is one of the most popular bodhisattvas in Tibetan Buddhism and Vajrayana. According to legend, she arose from the tears of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, which he shed when he saw all the suffering in the world. Literally, her name means "she who frees": she who takes us across the ocean of samsara.
Tara has many forms, most commonly found as White Tara and Green Tara. Green Tara represents the active, energetic side of compassion and is the national protector of Tibet. White Tara, on the other hand, embodies the fertile, maternal aspect of compassion. It helps remove obstacles on the way to awakening and cures diseases.
